Sometimes the best thing that you can do for your company is to outsource. This can include outsourcing the manufacturing of products, the handling of customer service, or any other facet of the business. Three of the top reasons for outsourcing are:

Flexibility

Finding specialists

Saving money

Flexibility

Whether you have a small or a large company, you will find that your needs change with the market and seasonal spikes in business. When you outsource, you can have increased flexibility to adjust certain aspects of your business, including the ability to negotiate contract employment duration and salaries.

Specialists

Hiring specialists can be time consuming and expensive when you are working in a limited geographical area. If you choose to outsource your work, you can find highly specialized people who are willing to do short term projects. Sometimes hiring people to work in-house requires you to risk having non-productive seasons. Rather than doing this, you can outsource to specialists
who are highly educated and have the skills that you are looking for, even if you only need them for a short time.

Saving Money

One of the top reasons for outsourcing is saving money. If you are looking for laborers who will work for less and locations where real estate is more affordable, outsourcing can be the best option.

When you take all of the factors into consideration, outsourcing allows you to more effectively control your
spending. It also provides you with the flexibility to run your business more smoothly, and gives you access to a wide range of specialists.

What the Heck?

Like many businesses, you may believe that producing a
higher quality product is both expensive and time consuming. According to the
Total Quality Management philosophy, improving quality actually saves time and money. Originating in the
1940s, Total Quality Management, or TQM, was a concept that was designed by
several American management consultants. By embracing the ideas outlined in
this concept, Japanese manufacturers have markedly improved the quality of
products that they produce. They have been able to exponentially increase
exports, undergoing a complete transformation from the days when Japanese
products were thought of as low quality. In today’s world, cars made by
Japanese companies are some of the safest and most reliable cars on the market.

A Change in Perception

In many companies, quality is the responsibility of the
workers, rather than management or anybody else. According to their
performance, they are either penalized or rewarded. According to Total Quality
Management, producing a high quality product is actually the responsibility of
everyone in the entire company. By implementing effective ways to communicate
with customers and evaluate their satisfaction with the product, management is
able to make recommendations and provide training so that all employees are
able to understand the big picture and improve performance. This is just one
way that businesses can improve the quality of their products and exceed
customer expectations.

Performance Affects the Bottom Line

Companies are constantly recalling products that they have
sold. These recalls are not only expensive, but they also cause customers to
distrust the company, thereby hurting the reputation and the future of the
company. Even when a faulty or low quality product isn’t dangerous and doesn’t
merit a recall, it reflects poorly on the company. Contrastingly, when people
purchase a higher quality product, they gain trust and develop loyalty to that
brand.

By implementing processes that encourage high performance,
high morale for employees, and that improve the quality of products, you begin
an upward cycle that will help your company continually increase profit and
success.

As with every business leader who values the viability of his/her business as a true developing and profit-making institution must know, the satisfaction of customer needs and wants must be answered accordingly if the business were to become as successful as desired.

Quality engineering is the process of applying science in dealing with the methods and processes involved with the planning, design, construction and selling of a certain product according to set standards of quality. These standards of quality are to be based on the target market’s expectations- the product or service to be manufactured must strictly adhere to these demands if the business were to become a success. The scientific process of quality engineering deals with the concerns of project leaders to meet these demands in order to ensure customer satisfaction which would then of course result in success of the product or service and hence, ensure good profits for the business.

There are six stages that are crucial to this process of ensuring quality in a product or service:

The first stage involves the drawing up of the blueprint for the product or service. This stage involves drawing the plan for what the product is supposed to be like, what its functions and attributes will be, and the goals that this product or service will serve as the answer to. Planning for this stage involves a lot of market research because information regarding the target market’s needs and demands must be gathered in order to provide inspiration for the problems and deficiencies that this product will seek to address for the target customers. This is the part where the standards and requirements for the product or service are then set.

The second stage is the process of actually molding the product to suit the standards and requirements that were set, based on the information gathered from the target market.

The third stage is the part where the process flow of how to manufacture the designed product is then carefully planned and illustrated. This is where the materials, method of construction, cost planning, etc. is mapped out.

The fourth stage is the process of then constructing the product based on the design that was mapped out. This stage is very important because this is already the part where the product is being created and put to tangible use. Therefore the parts, materials, and processes must be assembled and developed carefully in order to result in a product that strictly measures up to the standard and requirements that had been planned, designed, and set in order to satisfy customer needs.

Step five is the process of then selling the finished product. This stage marks the beginning of quality measured through personal interaction with customers. Customer service is highly emphasized in this stage, but more so in the next.

The final stage in quality management is the customer service that is offered after sales of the products have been made. This means that the measure of quality for this phase is defined by catering to the customer’s needs like answering their concerns with the product, warranty services, fixing or replacement services, answering concerns, technical support, etc.

Any competitive company must be aware of and put to good use the best methods and processes possible in order to ensure good quality of their products and/or services and in effect enhance profitability for their business.

Ensuring good quality by focusing on the needs of the target customers is made possible through the application of the science that is quality engineering. This method oversees the flow of the processes in the design and manufacture of the products or services being offered and this involves making sure that everything is aligned with the vision, mission, and goals of the company and of course, with the standards and expectations set by the target customers.

Quality control and management is very important in making sure that the product or service that will be produced shall ensure or generate total customer satisfaction. Among the most widely-used business process models for this sort of quality control and management is the six sigma process.

The six sigma process is a business model or philosophy that aims to continue the enhancement of a product based on customer standards. This approach also focuses on quality improvement through checking products or services for the prevention of flaws. This model also emphasizes the implementation of company-wide activities in order to motivate the designated employees and teams for a higher performance. These teams will be monitored and hence motivated consistently into trying to measure up to the standards of quality set by the target customers and also to making sure that there is minimal deviation from the standards and requirements that were originally designed for the particular product or service to be marketed.

The six sigma process proves to be very beneficial when it comes to making sure that quality in products is achieved at a faster rate and that customer satisfaction is maintained. This is achieved through constant motivation of teams and employees in maintaining the good performance required of measuring up to the target customers’ standards and expectations. This then leads to higher viability and profitability for the company that chooses the six sigma approach to quality improvement.

A quality improvement model that is used under the six sigma approach is one that has been credited to WE Deming. This quality management model is called DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control).

Define- this first step in dealing with a product or service involves defining or determining the problem or cause for the flaw in quality. It also means determining the resources available (such as time, costs, manpower, etc.) that will enable for proper treatment of the problem. This step can also be roughly compared to “diagnosing the problem”. Being able also to determine the scope of the development plan to be undertaken is part of this first process.

Measure- this step entails determining the point of reference or yardstick for the measures to be done for the development plan to be undertaken. It is important to specify the rate of the defect that has been discovered as well as all other significant information that can be used in order to formulate the solution for the development plan to be implemented against the flaw that has been discovered. Measuring is gathering the necessary initial information necessary for formulating a solution.

Analyze- this step is now the “formulation of the solution”. This means having had the necessary initial information on the problem or flaw, this step now entails the need for being able to make a plan or solution that will address the flaw that has been discovered, and then putting this solution to the test. There does not need to be only one solution however, the practitioner can implement experiments on certain samples in order to determine which the best solution is. Another function of this step is also to eliminate all the other selections and to then determine accurately the solution that will work best. This step can also be roughly compared to “formulating a hypothesis”.

Improve- This step now means putting into action the solution that has been formulated. This means actually putting the development plan into real application and evaluating whether it truly works to solve the discovered defect or not. More trial-and-error experimentation may be needed in order for this step to truly be effective in determining the best way to solve the problem.

Control- this step is a defining feature of the DMAIC approach to six sigma. This step aims in making sure that progress remains on an uphill climb and not downhill. The usual assumption with quality improvement plans (and with most other business plans in general) is that the optimum performance can only be achieved at the beginning and that as time goes on, the performance lags and must then be replaced by a new development or business plan. The control step ensures that this will not be the case as steps and methods for making sure that development is continuous will be implemented.

In order to achieve profitability, the answer to the many questions is to answer the demands of the customers themselves. Only through total customer satisfaction can profitability be gained. So the important question now is this: how do you ensure total customer satisfaction?

The demands of the target market are the value marks when it comes to setting the standards and requirements for a product or service’s rate of quality. There are certain characteristics and specifications that the customers have which define what they need and want from a certain product or service. These characteristics and specifications are the determinants of whether or not a certain product or service meets the demands and therefore the satisfaction of the customers. Without addressing these matters, profitability may be highly debilitated. In order to answer to the needs of the target market, a good company must have a good system set for a good quality management program.

A good quality management program means that the product or service to be constructed is something that will meet the requirements and expectations of the target market; good service performance in aiding the customers with their new products after sales have been made is also part of a good quality management program.

Of course, before being able to construct a quality management program, the company must first organize a system of quality that will determine how they will judge their products. This quality system will contain the characteristics to be judged in order to define the quality of the particular product or service to be produced for the market.

The first characteristic of quality is the quality of the product’s blueprint or plan. This is the engineering that is involved with the scheme of the product or service and how good it is, as well as how good it answers the needs and wants of the target market. This first step is one that is involved with planning the product.

The second characteristic in defining quality is the rate of how the finished product is then seen to have strictly adhered to the specifications that were set by the initial plans and designs. Not all the time manufacturing processes yield a product that has been constructed exactly according to plan (in certain manufacturing situations, there are concerns that cause compromises to be made such as costs of materials, time of production, availability of resources, etc.) and that’s why determining whether a certain finished product measures up to the initial plan accordingly is an important factor in determining quality.

The third characteristic for determining quality is the satisfaction based on good customer service. After the product has been planned, designed, the blueprint and the process have been laid out, next comes the actual construction of the product. After the manufacturing processes, then the process of selling the product comes into play. Measuring performance on this third process is very important because in this third phase, actual contact with the target customers is put into play and this is where customer trust, satisfaction and loyalty may or may not be firmly established. It is important to remember that no matter how good a product may be, if it is not presented accordingly to the customers, and if the concerns of the customers afterwards are not given the proper attention and appropriate action, then satisfaction, trust, and loyalty may suffer, and then follows viability and profitability for the business.

In all these aspects of quality, customer satisfaction is the topmost focus. These three characteristics of quality are of equal importance because if a certain level of incompetence is present in either of these quality specifiers, the fate of the product and the business will surely suffer the critical consequences.
